Basmati Rice is a variety of long grain rice grown in India and Pakistan, notable for its fragrance and delicate. Its name means “the fragrant one” in Sanskrit, but it can also mean “the soft rice,” and the word coincidently means “my smile” in Arabic. India is the largest cultivator and exporter of this rice, followed by Pakistan; it is primarily grown through paddy field farming in the Punjab region.

The metric grains of basmati rice are longer than most other types of rice. Cooked grains of Basmati rice are characteristically free hanging rather than muggy, as with most long-grain rice. Cooked basmati rice can be uniquely identified by its aroma. Basmati rice is available in two varieties : white and brown.

Basmati Rice Recipe

Wash the rice with cold water until it runs clean then drain thoroughly. Heat oil in average saucepan over high heat until almost smoking. Add whole spices and cook, stirring until the spices pop. Add onions and cook, touching until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add rice and cook, exciting until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Add 1-1 2 cups water and salt ; bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover tightly, and simmer until all water has been taken over, about 17 minutes. Remove from warmth and let stand, covered, at least 10 minutes. Gently fluff with a fork, transferring the whole spices, and serve.
